I am a 39-year veteran of the classroom. I began as a teacher intern with full teaching responsibilities in 1976 at Roy High School in Roy, Utah. I Graduated in 1977 from Weber State University with a BA in History and then received a Masters of Education Degree in 1987 from the same University. I have taught, like most social studies teachers, a number of different courses ranging from U.S. History to World History, Economics, and U.S. Government /Law. I have taught AP Government and Politics and AP United States History both of which I have done for over 25 years. I have been at the reading for the College Board for the past 15 readings both as a reader and a table leader and I have been a consultant for the College Board for 12 years. I am an adjunct instructor for Weber State University in their History Department teaching new teacher candidates how to teach social studies. I have also been an instructor for UCLA in their online APSI program. I am currently a student teacher supervisor for both Weber State University and Brigham Young University Idaho. I love teaching; it has been a huge part of my life. I am a father of five wonderful children and fourteen grandchildren. I live in West Point, Utah, which is a small community about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City.
This advanced placement Government and Politics Institute will assist teachers in planning an AP Government and Politics curriculum so that their students’ will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a Government and Politics program. It is designed to help teachers develop in their students the ability to think critically, analyze major themes in government, the ability to master the skill of multiple choice assessments and essay assessments.
During the institute we will examine course organization, teaching methods, reading and writing strategies, classroom activities and simulations, and ways to prepare students for the AP exam. It is expected that you will come away from this institute with renewed enthusiasm, skills, and understanding of what a successful AP Government class can be. I will expect that you will share your ideas, and participate in activities that will help us all become better educators.
